Sports facilities and gym made possible by housing developer

With the Government pushing us all to tackle issues of weight and diet news that new sports and exercise facilities have been opened near Cheltenham could not be better timed.

The new £200,000 facilities on Prestbury Playing Fields, include a multi-use games area, a one third of a mile circuit, an adult outdoor gym area and an enhanced children’s play area.

The facilities are in addition to the football pitch, youth pitch and tennis courts already in the immediate area.

It has been a development made possible by financial contributions from Bovis, which has its reagional headquarters in Cheltenham, and Bloor Homes as part of their development on Starvehall Farm, off the B4065 directly south of Cheltenham Racecourse.

The new sports facilities have been constructed by Caloo Ltd, UK based specialists in supplying fitness and playground equipment for outdoor areas.

Councillor Linda Langrish, of Prestbury Parish Council, who also chaired the working group for the project, said: “This is a great facility for the whole community, with something truly for everyone - the MUGA for team sports, the enhanced children’s play area, the adult outdoor gym equipment and the Daily Mile circuit for all ages to encourage regular exercise.

“We are very excited to bring this development to the village and we are very confident it will be greatly enjoyed by many people. In many respects the timing of the completion of this facility could not have been better with the current focus on tackling obesity and adopting more healthy lifestyles.”

Richard Fishlock, physical activity specialist - facilities and active design, at Active Gloucestershire said: “We are delighted to see this investment into sport and physical activity in Prestbury, and congratulate the Parish Council and the local community for making the scheme a reality.

“The new facilities perfectly complement what was on already offer at the playing fields and give local people of all ages and abilities some great opportunities to get active with their families, friends and teammates.”

The new multi-use games area will be suitable for five-a-side football, netball and basketball, with lines pre-marked for each sport.

The facility, which can be floodlit until 9pm, will be available for hire by the hour at £25 per hour plus £5 per hour for floodlight use and must be pre-booked via the Prestbury Parish Council website.

The outside adult gym area will have four stations, for up to six adults to use at one time.

The Parish Council hope to run dedicated group personal training sessions for local residents, of all ages: teenagers through to older age groups.

The Daily Mile, a third of a mile circuit of the playing field, will enable running or walking in a safe, car-free environment. Children, parents with children in prams, adults of all ages can benefit.
