Gloucestershire-based housing association Bromford has completed a deal to purchase part of a former railway depot in the centre of Gloucester which will provide more than 100 affordable homes for the city.
Bromford has acquired the southern phase of the Great Western Yard site off Great Western Road near the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital in a multi-million pound deal with Eutopia Homes.
The redevelopment of the former railway yard was given the go-ahead in January this year for 315 homes to be built across the entire site, of which Bromford will be building 113 on the southern phase.
Bromford’s homes will be a mix of 87 houses and 26 flats for rent and shared ownership
In addition to the new homes, Bromford will be providing parking spaces for 125 cars and 234 bicycles alongside a playground.
The homes will be built utilising modern methods of construction, including timber frames, with Bromford’s in-house construction team aiming to start on site in autumn 2025.
Bromford’a head of land Adam Frontczak said: “We’re delighted to have completed this deal to acquire the southern phase of Great Western Yard which will provide more than 100 affordable homes for local people.
“This development of new homes not only signals a fresh start for the site, it’s further progress in tackling the housing crisis and giving individuals and families a safe, secure place to live.
“We look forward to seeing the transformation of this prominent city centre site into a sustainable new development and a flourishing community.”
The acquisition of land at Great Western Yard is the latest successful purchase of land in the wider Gloucester area by Bromford.
Over the past year the housing association has completed the acquisition of an 11-acre site in Highnam where it plans to build 95 homes and also secured land at Blackbridge to deliver 30 new homes.
“Gloucestershire remains a key growth area for us,” Adam continued. “We already own more than 12,000 homes across the county and are on site in several locations building hundreds more.
“The completion of this deal in Gloucester is the latest in a long line of successful land acquisitions that are helping us to accelerate our land-led programme and signals our intention to be the leading developer of affordable housing in the county.
“We’re eager to explore further opportunities for suitable sites across the county and wider region.”
Bromford is part of Bromford Flagship, a housing association with 80,000 homes across the West of England, West Midlands and East Anglia.
Over the next 30 years, the housing association has ambitions to build 2,000 homes a year, many of which will be on land it acquires and develops itself.
