A series of commemorative events will take place throughout the day in Gloucester tomark Victory in Europe Day, honouring those who gave their lives for king and country.
At 9am Gloucester Town Crier Alan Myatt will deliver the Official Proclamation, provided by Pageantmaster of VE Day 80 Bruno Peek, at Gloucester Cross.
It will be read simultaneously by Town Criers across Britain in a tribute to this special anniversary.
At 6pm, visitors and residents are invited to a special edition of the Llanthony History Huddle at Llanthony Secunda Priory.
Attendies will gather to share stories, memories, and photographs of Gloucester and Llanthony during WWII.
There’ll be interactive displays, guest speakers, and a relaxed atmosphere for conversation and reflection.
And also at Llanthony Priory and Sula Lightship from 7.30pm there’ll be 1940s-themed entertainment hosted by Gloster Swing Dance.
Dress in 1940s attire, bring a picnic blanket, and celebrate VE day in style.
The event’s grand finale will take place at the Sula Lightship, where the Cathedral Youth Choir will perform the official VE Day 80 hymn from the upper deck.
As the light is lit, those gathered will commemorate VE Day and the return of hope after years of darkness.
At 9pm a tribute will be held on Robinswood Hill attended by The Mayor, Sheriff, their consorts, and Town Crier.
The Beacon of Hope will be lit, joining others across symbolising Victory in Europe and honouring those who served.
Visitors to Robinswood Hill should be aware that it can be slippery in wet weather—the event may be subject to cancellation if conditions are poor.
Anyone attending should wear sturdy footwear and bring a torch for safe descent after sunset.
