£21m will deliver free training in Gloucestershire for airline pilots
One of the world’s biggest and best know airlines has committed millions of pounds to fully-fund the training of 200 pilots as it bids to open the door to all, regardless of background.
Dears Readers,
Today marks the end of a short week for Raikes. As we enter the summer holiday period we have to let staff have a break, which means we will not be publishing on (Friday).
We’ve already had a great reaction this week to our Monday email edition, which saw us put the prospect of the Phoenix Village Project back into the spotlight and learn that lots has been going on behind the scenes.
It’s something that led the Cheltenham man behind the plans, Marksteen Adamson, to kindly post “Thanks Andrew for your write up and support. Love what you do at the Raikes Journal.”
You can read the story here.
Editor’s note: If you are a regular reader you’ll know by now we usually part paywall the main story on a Thursday and Friday. This is because this kind of journalism – where you actually speak to real people and write original pieces of copy – takes money to produce and edit. Our paywall is a prompt to encourage you to join our cohort. Our community is growing and your support, if you’ve not already pledged it, would not only be warmly welcomed, but help make Raikes sustainable and able to continue to pursue its other purpose - championing the county, telling the stories that will otherwise never be told, and helping create the community that makes this county so very special. Find out more below.
Have a great weekend. We’ll be back with you on Monday.

You will be able to see past the paywalls on our second and third email editions of the week, that lock all our archive after two weeks and lock our rolling Top 100 Businesses in Gloucestershire, the series that follows the financial fortunes of our biggest firms by turnover. £21m will deliver free training in Gloucestershire for airline pilots
One of the world’s biggest and best know airlines, British Airways, has committed millions of pounds to fully-fund the training of 200 pilots as it bids to open the door to all, regardless of background.
A Gloucestershire business that specialises in pilot training is set to benefit from a £21 million investment by British Airways.
The airline announced at this week’s Farnborough Airshow it would be making the money available to fully-fund the training of 200 prospective pilots.
Those individuals will train with British Airways’ Speedbird Pilot Academy, which aims to attract the “very best” talent with the funding aimed at not just finding new pilots, but helping redress barriers of social mobility and diversity within the profession.
