From China with Love – PPE arrives in Cheltenham
Friends have emerged in unlikely places for Cheltenham with some surprise packages arriving – branded with red love hearts – in the form of boxes and boxes of PPE.
The relationship being celebrated is that between the spa town and the Chinese city of Weihai eastern Shandong province.
Twinned with Cheltenham back in 1987 its mayor, Yan Jianbo, has clearly not forgotten the pledge of allegiance – and is aware of the UK and in particular the county’s battle against the coronavirus pandemic.
Mr Jianbo penned a letter to his English friends to accompany the consignment of more than 10,000 disposable protective face masks for the council to share among key workers.
Cllr Roger Whyborn, mayor of Cheltenham (councillor for Up Hatherley. Liberal Democrat), said: ‘’We have a special friendship with Weihai and we are very grateful to the mayor of Weihai, Yan Jianbo, and the city of Weihai for their support.
“This very kind PPE donation allows us to pass on vital safety equipment to those most in need to ensure our services can continue to get the support they need."
Cllr Diggory Seacome (Lansdown ward, Conservative), as chairman of the Twinning Association, said: ‘’Help from one of our twin towns goes to show how strong the twinning ethic is, and we are most grateful to Weihai for their generous gesture.’’
The donations will be shared with and distributed by the Local Resilience Forum to key workers within the borough and county.
Gloucestershire LRF covers an identical area to that policed by Gloucestershire Constabulary, based on the county’s political boundaries.
Weihai is a city in eastern Shandong province on the far Eastern side of China, fronting the Yellow Sea with a population of more than 2.5 million.
