Businessman to mine diamonds in Stroud

It sounds far-fetched, but apparently it is true – a Gloucestershire businessman is set to begin production of the county’s first diamonds, 'mined from the sky'.

As with all such things it is not quite so simply, but the green credentials of the process of creating the diamond caught the attention of the ever-adventurous Dale Vince, founder of Ecotricity.

And the entrepreneur and environmentalist has now set out plans to produce thousands of carbon-negative, laboratory-grown diamonds said to be “made entirely from sky” in Stroud, also home to the headquarters for his green energy company.

Apparently, the technology involved (green tech of course) behind the creation of the gems uses carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and solar electricity as part of the process. The diamonds are said to be chemically identical to mined diamonds.

Mr Vince told The Guardian newspaper the result was the “world’s first zero-impact diamond”, the making of which even helps remove carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere.

Not afraid to ruffle a few feathers as he goes, Mr Vince said he hoped the process would be a shot across the bows of the traditional diamond mining industry, which he said caused “irreversible damage” to the environment.

“Making diamonds from nothing more than the sky, from the air we breathe – is a magical, evocative idea – it’s modern alchemy,” Mr Vince told The Guardian. “We don’t need to mine the earth to have diamonds, we can mine the sky.”

A price tag for the stones is not yet set. But the idea of buying jewellery made from diamonds created in Gloucestershire tantalising.

It is reported the new venture, Sky Diamonds, will be capable of producing 200 carats of the carbon-negative diamonds a month with the facility going on to create up to 1,000 a month in the next 12 months. The diamonds re accredited by the International Gemological Institute.

The Raikes Journal has been in touch with Mr Vince's PR team who confirmed all of the above. We just couldn't wait for the official release before telling you.
