Cirencester Chamber of Commerce monthly report (September, 2020): David Fowles, joint vice president

On the September 8, we took a petition to the town council and asked them to lobby the Cotswold District Council to reverse the 30 per cent increases in car parking charges.

We presented four independent surveys which expressed the combined views of 900 local business people and residents.

The message was clear - 'Don’t kill our town'. Car parks are already half empty so don’t make it worse!!

Although we were unsuccessful, we are making progress:

We have requested that the car park monthly income and occupancy figures are published as we go forward and we will let the numbers speak for themselves

We have held the first of our planned ‘Town centre and business support’ meetings with the town council chief executive officer and senior officers to identify the issues affecting businesses and to find solutions.

We have also had an inaugural meeting with other stakeholders and the portfolio holder for economy and skills and the economic development officer at the district council. These will continue and will be productive.
